Ford Listened: The 5.0L V8 Is Back Across the 2027 F-150 Lineup

Ford Listened: The 5.0L V8 Is Back Across the 2027 F-150 Lineup

Ford is making a move for 2027 that should get the attention of
traditional V8 truck buyers.

The 5.0-liter V8 is returning to the F-150 King Ranch and Platinum,
giving buyers of Ford’s higher-end pickups access to the naturally
aspirated V8 again.

But the V8’s return is only part of a much larger update to the 2027
F-150.

Ford is also introducing a new standard EcoBoost engine, updating
several exterior designs, expanding truck technology, and bringing a
towing-focused version of BlueCruise to the F-150.

THE 5.0L V8 RETURNS TO KING RANCH AND PLATINUM

For buyers who wanted a luxurious F-150 without giving up the
traditional V8, the engine lineup had become more restrictive.

Ford is changing that for 2027.

The 5.0-liter V8 will once again be available on King Ranch and
Platinum, extending availability of the engine across the regular F-150
lineup.

Ford rates the 5.0 at 400 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque when using
premium fuel under its stated testing standard.

That gives buyers another choice alongside Ford’s turbocharged and
hybrid powertrains.

For some longtime truck owners, the attraction isn’t simply a horsepower
number.

A naturally aspirated V8 delivers its power differently from a
turbocharged V6. There’s also the sound, throttle response, and
familiarity of a configuration that has been part of American pickups
for generations.

Ford says customer feedback helped guide changes to the 2027 truck.

THERE’S A NEW BASE ECOBOOST, TOO

The V8 might grab the headline, but another important change is
happening at the other end of the engine lineup.

Ford says the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 is being replaced by a new 3.0-liter
EcoBoost V6 as the standard engine.

The new engine shares its core architecture with the outgoing 2.7-liter.
Ford says it provides more torque through part of the rev range commonly
encountered during everyday driving.

Ford lists a maximum towing capacity of 8,400 pounds for a properly
configured F-150 with the new 3.0-liter EcoBoost, although actual
capacity varies with configuration, cargo, passengers, and equipment.

BUYERS STILL HAVE SEVERAL ENGINE CHOICES

Ford isn’t abandoning its other F-150 powertrains.

Along with the new 3.0 EcoBoost and returning availability of the 5.0
V8, the lineup continues to include the 3.5-liter EcoBoost and 3.5-liter
PowerBoost hybrid.

Ford lists up to 13,500 pounds of towing capacity for a properly
configured truck using the 3.5-liter EcoBoost.

The PowerBoost hybrid offers strong combined torque and continues to
provide available Pro Power Onboard electrical capability.

That means Ford isn’t betting on only one type of truck buyer.

Someone primarily interested in everyday driving has one set of options.
Heavy towing buyers have another. Hybrid customers have the PowerBoost,
while drivers who still prefer a naturally aspirated V8 can choose the
5.0.

FORD IS BRINGING BLUECRUISE TO TOWING

Perhaps the most technologically interesting change has nothing to do
with what’s underneath the hood.

The 2027 F-150 introduces BlueCruise with Towing.

Ford says the system allows hands-free, eyes-on driving on compatible
divided highways while the truck is towing an eligible trailer.

There are important limitations.

Drivers still have to remain attentive, and the system doesn’t replace
the driver’s responsibility for controlling the truck. Trailer type,
dimensions, weight, road conditions, and vehicle configuration can
affect operation.

THE 2027 F-150 GETS A FRESH LOOK

Ford didn’t stop with the powertrain and technology.

The XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum receive updated grille and
wheel designs for 2027.

The changes modernize the familiar F-150 appearance rather than
completely reinventing the truck.

WHY THE V8 RETURN MATTERS

The interesting part of Ford’s announcement isn’t that the 5.0 V8
suddenly became a new engine.

It didn’t.

What’s significant is that Ford is expanding where customers can choose
it while much of the automotive industry continues moving toward smaller
turbocharged engines, hybrids, and electrification.

For a King Ranch or Platinum buyer, the decision no longer has to be
luxury or the 5.0.

They can have both.

At the same time, Ford isn’t turning away from newer technology. The
same 2027 lineup includes a new turbocharged base engine, a hybrid
option, and increasingly sophisticated driver-assistance technology.

Instead of forcing every customer toward the same powertrain philosophy,
Ford is maintaining several very different choices.

THE F-150 ENGINE DEBATE ISN’T OVER

Truck owners have argued about V8 versus EcoBoost for years, and the
2027 lineup certainly isn’t going to end that debate.

The 3.5 EcoBoost offers strong torque and serious towing capability. The
PowerBoost adds hybrid assistance and onboard electrical power. The new
3.0 EcoBoost becomes the entry point.

And then there’s the 5.0.

It remains the straightforward naturally aspirated V8 choice—and for
2027, more F-150 buyers will once again be able to order one.

Which would you choose in a 2027 F-150: the 5.0 V8, 3.5 EcoBoost, or
PowerBoost hybrid?
